How to Apply DTF Transfers the Right Way

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is one of the most flexible and vibrant ways to decorate garments, but it’s the application process that truly brings your designs to life. Whether you’re pressing tees, hoodies, or tote bags, proper application ensures durability, color vibrancy, and customer satisfaction.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply DTF Transfers

1. Set Up Your Heat Press

  • Temperature: 275–320°F
  • Pressure: Medium to firm
  • Time: 10–15 seconds

Pro Tip: A quality heat press with even pressure is crucial. Cold spots can lead to poor adhesion.

2. Position Your Transfer

  • Lay your garment flat with lint removed.
  • Place the DTF transfer film-side up on the fabric where you want it pressed.
  • Use heat-resistant tape if needed to prevent shifting.

3. Press

  • Press at the recommended settings.
  • Peel types:
  • Cold peel: Let it cool completely before removing the film.
  • Hot peel: Peel immediately after pressing (check your film type!).

4. Optional Second Press

  • Use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and press again for 5 seconds.
  • This locks in the ink and gives a soft, matte finish.

Final Tips

  • Store transfers flat and in a dry place.
  • Test settings on different garment types before full production.
  • Always check adhesion by stretching the print gently after pressing.
